Today is the last day of Carnival, or at least it is in most of Italy …. but not in my area where it will go on until next Saturday, so our Lent will be a little shorter.
In the Christian religion, Lent is the 40-day period before Easter, commemorating the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert, according to the Gospels, before beginning his public ministry.
During this time people should look more honestly at themselves and adopt a more sober lifestyle.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends approximately six weeks later with Easter.
The word Lent, in English, is a shortened form of the Old English term lencten, meaning “spring season”, while in Italian the word is Quaresima and derives from Latin quadragesima (“fortieth” day before Easter)
Some parts of Italy do not follow the common Roman Rite with Lent starting on Ash Wednesday…
